Description

The panel originates from a Franciscan church, as indicated by the presence of the order’s saints prominently positioned on the sides, and depicts the death of the Virgin with the Apostles.
On the left, Saint John holds the palm of Paradise, while above, Jesus supports the soul of Mary, who hands her girdle to Saint Thomas. In the foreground, the Archangel Michael punishes two Jews attempting to desecrate the body. Dismembered at an unknown time, the artwork was restored in the 19th century with the addition of two complete panels and the overpainting of lost sections, recognisible by their darker tones. Acquired in 2022, the altarpiece was restored, returning its full legibility.
