Description

The panel depicts the Virgin holding an octagonal base from which the Tree of the Cross with the Crucified Christ rises. Eight scrolls, each inscribed with one of Christ’s last sayings from the Cross, hang from the branches of the tree. In the lower right corner, a kneeling saint is shown in adoration. Possibly created for private devotion, the work features an original iconography that condenses the final moments of Christ’s life into a single, unified image.
