Description

Pope Celestine V is depicted half-length within a perspectival niche, blessing with his right hand while holding a model of the city of L’Aquila in his left. The Holy Pope wears the papal tiara (triregnum) and a white alb covered by a blue cope trimmed with gold, embroidered with two flowers and fastened at the chest with a clasp.

While the detailed rendering of the garments and floral motifs reflects a late Gothic tradition, the refined chiaroscuro effects and the perspectival composition herald the emerging Renaissance style of L’Aquila.
