The Virgin is seated frontally on a low bench, holding the Christ Child with her left arm. The Child stands on her knees, grasping a small sphere in his hand. The artist follows his distinctive stylistic formula for the Virgin’s face: an elongated oval shape, small chin, prominent brow arches, slender nose, thin lips, and almond-shaped, Eastern-looking eyes. The sculpture has lost its original polychromy, with only fragmentary traces of colour remaining. The back is smooth and left uncarved. Works of a similar type by this unknown master can be found in several churches in the province of Teramo.
