The fresco, attributed to Armanino da Modena due to an inscription now partly lost, depicts a Deesis, iconography of Byzantine origins with Christ Blessing flanked by the Virgin and Saint John the Baptist in prayer for the souls of sinners. Originally in the apse of its original church, it was exposed to bad weather for a long time due to the collapse of the roof. It was removed after World War II to preserve the surviving painting and then placed in the space designated for it, where it is still on display today.
