March 14, 2025, 4:30 PM, MuNDA Sala Francescana. Presentation of Germano Boffi’s book Silvestro di Jacopo Aquilano. A Saint Sebastian for Castel del Monte

The volume, commissioned by the CastruMontis Cultural Association, is the second in a series of concise “Quaderni” (Notebooks) dedicated not only to Castel del Monte, but to all the territories commonly referred to as the Lands of the Barony.

Castel del Monte, an ancient outpost of the Barony of Carapelle northeast of L’Aquila—involved in the great economic and cultural phenomenon of transhumance—based its political influence and economic prosperity on the trade of wool and semi-finished products between the 14th and 15th centuries. This fortunate situation has left its mark on the village, as is evident in its noble palaces, churches, and works of art. The study of a finely crafted polychrome wooden sculpture depicting Saint Sebastian now offers the opportunity to investigate more closely the role of the patron and the relationships that linked Castel del Monte to Silvestro dell’Aquila, perhaps the most famous master of the Renaissance in Abruzzo.
