The painting depicts the Madonna and Child Enthroned surrounded by the most important saints of the Franciscan order. At the Virgin’s feet, a nun is kneeling, possibly Abbess Sabetta of the Third Order of Saint Francis in L’Aquila, who played a role in the Sant’Angelo monastery’s transition from Benedictine to Franciscan rule in 1481. The side panels are occupied by the Saints Francis of Assisi, Michael the Archangel, Jerome and Anthony of Padua. The prominent depiction of Archangel Michael serves as a clear tribute to the patron saint of the complex.
Above, in the central cusp, Christ is shown in Pietà, accompanied by the instruments of the Passion. On either side stand the Saints Bernardine of Siena, Louis of Toulouse, Bonaventure of Bagnoregio and the Blessed John of Capistrano.
In the predella below, Christ blessing is flanked by the figures of the apostles.
