May 9th, 4:30 PM at the MuNDA Sala Francescana. Presentation of the volume Provincia Pinnensis. The Franciscan Middle Ages in Abruzzo. Architecture – Visual Arts – Music, by Francesco Aceto, Cristiana Pasqualetti, and Francesco Zimei
This book, the latest in the “History and Civilization of Penne” series, tenaciously championed by Lucio Marcotullio, focuses on the architecture, figurative arts, and music that flourished in the Franciscan Province of Abruzzo during the Middle Ages. Francesco Aceto, Cristiana Pasqualetti, and Francesco Zimei contributed to its creation, each from their own disciplinary perspective but nonetheless sharing a shared awareness of the symbiotic relationship between the architectural container and the figurative apparatus, conceived and staged as a captivating stage for the performative actions that daily embodied the religious sensibilities and beliefs of medieval man.
Francesco Aceto has prepared an initial critical assessment of the territorial and urban planning issues associated with Minorite architecture, re-examining consolidated cultural hierarchies based on a more consistent exegesis of Franciscan legislation.
Through the ideal reconstruction of lost figurative contexts, Cristiana Pasqualetti aimed to uncover, through formal aspects, the communication strategies adopted by the Franciscan Order and lay patronage.
Francesco Zimei, drawing on European and overseas libraries and archives, as well as information made available by the figurative arts themselves, outlined the history of a particular poetic-musical genre rooted in the deep layers of popular culture: the lauda. This was made tangible by the included recording of a previously unpublished repertoire, which sheds new light on local traditions.
