Description

The drawings, originating from the Dragonetti-de Torres Library in L’Aquila, were part of a 17-leaf sketchbook. They illustrate design details for a new reliquary project dedicated to Saint Peter Celestine in the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio in L’Aquila.
Conceived for the celebrations marking the fourth centenary (1694) of the hermit saint’s coronation as Pope Celestine V, the project was never carried out. It envisioned a marble confessio, of which the drawings depict the balustrade, designed in the form of a gable, enclosing the hypogeal chamber.
