Attributed to a painter from the Teramo area, Matteo da Campli, based on the signature inscribed on the base, the panel was clandestinely sold at the end of the 19th century and replaced with a copy; it was later recovered and exhibited at the 1905 Exhibition of Ancient Abruzzese Art in Chieti. The work displays the typical features of Abruzzese painting of that period, characterised by rich colour and decorative detail. The Christ Child is shown with a large red halo marked with a gold cross and wearing a coral branch around his neck, a reference to his future Passion and Resurrection.
