Description

The sculpture, kept in the church of Santa Maria di Picenze until the first half of the 19th century, shows the Madonna seated on a small, rectangular, paneled bench. Her azure, starry mantle, with golden hem, opens to reveal a brocaded garment adorned with gold leaf foliage and flowers, identical to that of her son. The fabric cascades in soft, flowing folds. The Child, standing on His mother’s lap, stretches His arms towards her, clinging to the neckline of her dress. A recess for a now-missing crown is visible atop the Virgin’s head.
