As part of the events marking the 70th anniversary of the discovery of the Mammoth, the National Museum of Abruzzo has requested that Poste Italiane activate a temporary philatelic service, with a special postmark and postcard. The service will be presented to the press on Friday, August 30th, at 10:15 a.m. in the East Bastion of the 16th-century Castle of L’Aquila, where the important fossil has been housed since 1960.
Accreditation
Interested journalists are required to register for the press conference by emailing munda.ufficiostampa@cultura.gov.it.
On the same day, correspondence presented at the Poste Italiane stand, set up from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. under the portico of the 16th-century Castle, will be able to have the special postmarked.
A special limited-edition philatelic postcard has also been created for the occasion, which, together with the postmark, will constitute a collector’s item. The stamp was inspired by the logo celebrating the 70th anniversary, designed by architect Francesca Condò of the Directorate General of Museums.
The presentation event will feature Federica Zalabra, Director of MuNDA, Fausta Bergamotto, Undersecretary for the Ministry of National and International Cooperation (MIMIT), Pierluigi Biondi, Mayor of L’Aquila, and Marco Di Nicola, Head of Philately Sales at Poste Italiane.
The stamp will then be available starting August 31st for 60 days at the philatelic counter on Via della Crocetta, L’Aquila.
On Saturday, August 31st and Sunday, September 1st, respectively, the first 50 visitors to the Mammoth at the East Bastion of the Cinquecentesco Castle will receive a free postcard with a postmark. The stamp will then be deposited at the Historical Museum of Communication in Rome to become part of the postal history collection.
