The meeting takes place in an interior characterised by architectural elements reflecting the artist’s classicising culture; he was also an accomplished architect. The central arch frames a section of landscape that shows inspiration from Dürer. This episode, absent from both the New Testament and the apocryphal Gospels, is first narrated in the compilation known as the Meditationes Vitae Christi, attributed in its final form to Giovanni de’ Cauli (14th century).
