Description

The painting depicts the episode of the Nativity of the Virgin, divided into three moments: the main theme of the birth of Mary and two secondary episodes, the bathing of the newborn and the presentation of the Virgin to Joachim. At the centre of the scene, Anna rests in an ornate canopy bed, while maidservants bring rice and milk traditionally offered to women after childbirth. The elderly midwife draws attention as she looks toward the viewer while wiping her hands.
