Originally from the Abbey of Santa Maria in Monteplanizio, the Madonna was once seated on a now-lost throne. She is depicted with her left hand extended forward, while her right hand—now missing—once sheltered the blessing Christ Child. The original painted surfaces of the faces have been lost. Except for the separately carved and inserted arms, the group was sculpted from a single block of wood, hollowed out and closed at the back with a cover. The painted decoration continues across this rear panel, interrupted only by a small quadrangular recess, likely intended to house relics.
