At the centre, the Virgin is seated frontally on a throne, nursing the Christ Child who raises his right hand in a Latin-style blessing and holds the Gospel in his left. On the base of the throne, a rare Latin inscription records the date of the work and the name of the artist, identified as Gentile da Rocca, documented in 1271 in his native Roccamorice (Pescara), on the northern slopes of the Maiella.
The side panels, originally painted and designed to close over the central image, retain traces of their decoration. On the left panel, scenes of the Journey and Adoration of the Magi are still visible; below, there was once an image of the Presentation in the Temple.
