The sculpture, according to the commission document to Master Saturnino dated February 13, 1512, was to be placed inside a wooden tabernacle with two painted panels depicting Saints Roch and Sebastian and scenes from the life of Saint Anthony. Reduced to over eight hundred fragments after the 2009 earthquake, it underwent an exceptional restoration that allowed the recovery of a work that seemed irreparably lost.
