Description

The Virgin is seated on an ornate, backless throne, holding the Christ Child in her left arm as he raises his hand in blessing. With her right hand, she offers him a mirror—an allusion to the Latin inscription at the bottom of the panel: «IN GREMIO MATIRS FULGET SAPIENTIA PATIRS» (“In the Mother’s lap shines the Wisdom of the Father”).
At the foot of the throne, the kneeling donor is depicted in an attitude of prayer. During the Second World War, fearing theft and illicit trafficking, the people of Sivignano hid the original panel in private homes, replacing it with a copy to preserve its safety and legacy.
