Description

The panel, severely damaged by the 2009 earthquake, was masterfully restored by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. The painting can be traced back to the artist’s stay in L’Aquila, where he worked as an excellent architect as well as a painter, engaged in the construction of the façade of the Basilica of San Bernardino between 1525 and 1542. The influence of Raphael’s Visitation, on the altar of the Branconio Chapel in the church of San Silvestro in L’Aquila and now in the Prado Museum in Madrid, is clearly evident.
