After his conversion, Placidus, with his wife and two sons, is baptised on the same day at midnight by the bishop of Rome, who gives Placidus the name Eustace, his wife that of Theopista, and his two sons those of Agapitus and Theopistus.
The scene is the second of the first register of the case and takes place in a solemn, cross-vaulted room surmounted by a finely decorated pediment. The composition consists of six figures. In the centre, Eustace is immersed in the baptismal font up to the waist with his hands crossed on his chest. On his right, the bishop is blessing him, while on the left his wife and children are witnessing the scene. Behind the group three figures are depicted in the foreground, including the presbyter, who is raising a small jug made of silver foil, which originally must have looked shinier.
In 2019, the painting was recovered by the Florentine Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. In April of the same year, the tablet became part of the collection of the Museo Nazionale d’Abruzzo.
These painted panels were originally part of the wooden doors of a tabernacle that held a statue of Saint Eustace, the patron saint of the parish of Campo di Giove (L’Aquila). Each door was made of two vertical boards with hinges. On the inside, sixteen scenes painted in tempera illustrated key moments in the life of Saint Eustace, from his conversion to his martyrdom, based on the Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine. In 1902, the doors were stolen from the church. Later, the panels were cut into individual scenes and sold on the antiques market. Of these, eight belong to the MuNDA, five are part of a private collection, and three are still missing. The sculpture is kept at the Diocese of Sulmona-Valva.
