In the foreground, on the left, Saint Francis of Assisi, cloaked in a wide habit, receives the stigmata from Christ, who appears to him in the sky in the form of a seraph. At the bottom right, his companion Brother Leo is depicted sitting near a church, in the act of opening the sacred Gospel book at the request of Saint Francis. Behind the saint, the rocky summit of the Verna forms a natural backdrop, beyond which extends a vast hilly landscape, with a bridge over a river and a distant city.
